Living A Healthier Life In The New Year!

Everyone starts out the New Year with a list of goals and some of the most common resolutions include the desire to live a healthier lifestyle and lose weight. New Year or not, living a healthier lifestyle, or wellness lifestyle, is a goal for a large percentage of the population. The American Chiropractic Association (ACA) defines wellness as “an active process that promotes health and enhances quality of life.” That being said, one of the best ways to live a healthier lifestyle and lose weight is to get moving. Exercise, even moderate, is crucial in everyone’s life, and the health benefits of regular exercise and physical activity are hard to ignore.

It’s a known fact that exercise combats health conditions and diseases. The Mayo Clinic reports that no matter what your current weight, being active boosts high-density lipoprotein (HDL), or "good," cholesterol and decreases unhealthy triglycerides. That keeps blood flowing smoothly, which decreases risk of cardiovascular diseases. Regular physical activity can help you prevent or manage a wide range of health problems and concerns, including stroke, metabolic syndrome, type 2 diabetes, depression, and certain types of cancer, arthritis and even prevent falls. By not exercising on a regular basis, a person can actually be setting themselves up for broken bones, circulation problems caused by atrophying blood vessels, and a variety of other problems.

Exercise can help prevent excess weight gain or help maintain weight loss. Physical activity helps burn calories, and the more intense the activity, the more calories you burn. It doesn’t take large blocks of time to make the most of weight-loss benefits. If you don’t have time to work out, you can always look for ways to get active throughout the day in simple ways — by taking the stairs instead of the elevator, walking the dog, parking in the back of the lot, or stepping up household chores. As a general goal, aim for at least 30 minutes of physical activity every day. If you want to lose weight or meet specific fitness goals, you may need to exercise more.
